Clotho's Summer Dye Day

Clotho’s two-burner propane cooker, dating from the 1980s, is very old and ready for retirement. We will use up the gas on this Summer Dye Day and send the cooker and gas can off to the dump.

Join us from 9 to 3:30. Bring fibers and skeins of one or two ounces in net bags, one pound per person. Fibers should be well scoured and mordanted, if possible. Bring wet fibers, packed in zip bags in a bucket, one bucket per person. Also bring a bag lunch. Beverages provided. You should have rubber gloves and apron or just old clothes. If you have a favorite chair or hat bring it. We have mostly hard chairs & benches.

Do not bring spinning wheels, looms or other equipment. Everyone will be busy, monitoring pots, taking temperatures, measuring ph, etc.

We will have a large assortment of natural dyes in a range of colors. Two participants will be assigned to each pot. Each pot will have a recipe and all supplies necessary to dye a pound of fiber.

If you are not accustomed to mordanting we will have at least one yellow, one red dye, and indigo that will be suitable for un-mordanted fibers. This Dye Day is suitable for beginners or experienced dyers. Clotho’s members can sign up at the June meeting on Saturday, 6/15. Cost for this Dye Day is $20, payable at the event by cash or check to Becky Blake.

Roadside Weeds, Garden Flowers, and Kitchen Waste

Materials will be gathered from nature, the garden,  and rescued from the compost heap. We will have a fire in the pit and some stoves for cooking up the dyestuffs.  Bring up to a pound of prepared fibers, yarns, and fabrics. There will be at least 5 pots plus Indigo for over dyeing. Expect a lot of yellow and golden shades from the plant material.

Fleece Washing & Indigo Vat

Come to the Outdoor Studio to wash about five Gulf Coast Native fleeces from Meadow Farm.  These are Clotho's fleeces and will be used in Sheep to Shawl events in the future. We will also have a working Indigo Vat, so bring some fibers or fabrics.

Bring a bag lunch, beverages will be provided.

Standing Rock I.R. Community Garden

On May 31st I will fly with three long time friends to Fargo, ND where we will rent a vehicle and drive to Cannon Ball, ND on the Indian Reservation.  There we will work on June 1 and 2 for a Community Day with Virginia Baptists in the Dover Association.  On June 3 we will drive to Wakpala, SD to celebrate the start of a Community Garden.  On June 4 & 5 we will hold Gardening Workshops and Cooking Demos (what to do with all that produce). We drive back to Fargo on June 6 and fly home.

Red Dye Day - FULL

This is not a Workshop, just a fun Dye Day.  Join Becky and several Madder pots in her Outdoor Studio. Lt. George Washington wrote Gov. Dinwiddie asking for "Blood Red Coats" for the Virginia Regiment, preparing to fight the French & Indian War. We will work the Madder pots for the "Blood Red". Bring protein fibers, bag lunch, and $15 supply fee.
